What Is Indexed Universal Life Insurance (IUL)?
IUL policies offer permanent coverage with cash value growth tied to a market index — combining protection with long-term wealth accumulation potential.
Indexed Universal Life insurance — commonly called IUL — is a type of permanent life insurance that offers both a death benefit and a cash value component with a unique growth mechanism: the cash value earns interest based on the performance of a market index, such as the S&P 500, rather than a fixed rate.
How IUL Works
Each year, a portion of your premium goes toward the cost of insurance, and the remainder is credited to your cash value account. That account earns interest based on the performance of a chosen index — but with two important guardrails: a floor (typically 0%) that protects you from market losses, and a cap that limits your maximum gain in any given period.
This structure means your cash value can grow meaningfully in strong market years, while being shielded from the losses that would affect a direct market investment.
The Flexibility Advantage
Unlike whole life, IUL policies offer flexible premiums and adjustable death benefits. You can increase or decrease your coverage as your needs change, and you can vary your premium payments within certain limits. This makes IUL particularly attractive for business owners and high-income earners who want flexibility alongside permanent protection.
Tax Advantages
Cash value in an IUL grows tax-deferred, and policy loans — a common way to access that value — are generally tax-free. This makes IUL a compelling tool for supplemental retirement income, particularly for individuals who have already maximized contributions to qualified retirement accounts.
Is IUL Right for You?
IUL is a sophisticated product that works best when structured correctly and funded consistently over time. It is not a replacement for a diversified investment portfolio, but it can be a powerful complement — providing permanent protection, tax-advantaged growth, and flexible access to cash value throughout your life.
